If you are thinking of putting siding on your house, it is important to know what goes under the siding as it is to know the quality of the siding itself. Obviously, you wouldn’t dream of buying an automobile without looking under the hood!
Any building is only as good as the foundation that it’s built upon. Yet millions of home owners have had vinyl siding installed without a thought about the foundation or underlayment beneath the siding which is vitally important to the future appearance of their home.
People who side their homes are seeking a product that offers the genuine appearance of wood without the maintenance nightmare and constant upkeep and expense of wood. Although vinyl siding solves the ongoing problems of paint on wood, when installed with traditional underlayments, it has not had the solid look and feel of wood.
All siding, when properly and carefully installed, will give you the appearance of a new home at the same address the day the job is completed. The question is how long will it continue to look new and beautiful?
Tyvek & Paper-thin Underlayments
The cheapest way to prepare a house for siding is to wrap it with an aluminum foil product or some other inexpensive paper-thin product such as Tyvek.
Advantage: It costs almost nothing and reduces the cost of the installation.
Disadvantages:
- It doesn’t create a smooth flat wall surface to hang the siding on. In time the wall will tend to wave and buckle.
- It has no real “R” value. Therefore it has no real insulation properties.
- It does not support your vinyl siding.
Because vinyl siding has a tremendous expansion and contraction ratio, it is not nailed, but needs to be hung so it can expand and contract or, literally float. But the fact is behind your siding is nothing bur air.
Lean on it, push on it, or have something hit it, and it will push in and over time, will stay that way. Worse than that, it can crack when hit by a ball or bicycle. Would you be upset if this happened to your siding?
Flat Foam Underlayments
Many siding contractors today have switched from paper underlayments to flat foam underlayments. These sheets create a smooth flat wall to hang the siding from and they provide greater “R”-value, thereby adding insulation to the house, reducing drafts and saving on heat loss.
The “Feel” of Real Solid WoodAlthough this is better, there is still a problem. There is nothing solid behind the vinyl siding panel. You still will risk warping, gaps and buckling over time without a solid foundation behind your siding.
